International Patent Application (PCT)

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) makes it possible to capture a huge number of states (also non-European) with a single patent application. After filing, a national or regional patent office, e.g., the European Patent Office, performs a prior art search.

As soon as the applicant received the international search report, containing information regarding the patentability of the invention, and optionally after an international preliminary examination, the applicant has to enter the national or regional phases in the designated states.
